LAS PATRONAS HELPS CHILDREN WITH AUTISM, CELEBRAL PALSY AND NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS !
Dr. Shawn Centers, the Clinical Director of the Osteopathic Center for Children and Families, is a board certified pediatrician and currently sees a large number of children labeled with autism and sensory integration issues. Many of these children suffer from auditory specific hypersensitivity.
Dr. Centers is appreciative that the Las Patronas site committee that interviewed him at the Center was impressed and understanding of his proposal.
Dr. Centers believes that the use of sound and music in the treatment of children can be both comforting and therapeutic.
He explains that many children with autism actually have a phobia of sound; loud noises hurt their ears and even certain ranges of speech may be irritating or even painful to them. Can we imagine going through life and every sound that you hear sounds like fingers screeching across a chalkboard or a bomb exploring in your ears.
With the sound table and chair, Dr. Centers can introduce sound not through the ears but through the whole body.
The sound equipment therapy equipment, funded by Las Patrons, will be primarily used with children who have autistic spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, or other neurological disorders.
There are approximately 800 children with autism in our practice. This equipment will last at least 10 years and have an effect on 30,000 children.
THANK YOU LAS PATRONAS. YOUR GIFT WILL BE ONGOING.
